RESPECT and RESPECT TOO: Hatters and Sharks players as role models in schools across South Yorkshire.
The Hatters' involvement has had a huge impact on communities across the Sheffield City Region. Before the Hatters joined, the delivery group was male only; now it is both male and female, so young girls in our region see role models like themselves teaching them about key social issues and introducing them to basketball.
Canon Medical UK's sponsorship of the Hatters has also expanded the programmes with a body positivity workshop led by Hatters players: an open discussion on self-worth and how we value ourselves, for both young men and women. The emphasis is on how we are all different, and on being confident in who we are and accepting of ourselves and others. Sessions are mixed, rather than separate for boys and girls, to encourage open conversation and an understanding of how different people think about the same subject.
The programme is highly regarded within South Yorkshire as well as throughout the region, having won the Best Programme Award at the National Housing Federation Community Impact Awards for Yorkshire in 2012.
School Basketball Coaching visits takes place at each school, and delivery consists of 6 hours per school, to encourage participation in sport.
A Sheffield Sharks player or community coach delivers a weekly session to a maximum of 30 students per session. There is also an opportunity for a teacher or parent to assist in these sessions and learn the basics of coaching and playing basketball.
Delivered by Sharks and Hatters professional players, the programme utilises the environment in and around basketball to deliver a range of positive activities for one afternoon a week for up to 6 weeks.
They will involve a pastoral support session with the players, as positive role models from diverse communities leading activities where young people will look at issues around building positive character traits, developing positive relationships along with how to look after their health and wellbeing. The aim is for the students to develop their understanding of the implications of their life choices and the impact that negative and/or anti-social behaviour can have on them, their families, friends and communities. Alongside the pastoral input, they will also take part in coached basketball sessions with the players.
This programme is intended as an early intervention/preventative initiative to try and steer young people away from anti social behaviour in their communities. With this in mind, the programme would be most suited to students in Key Stage 3.
We are offering the programme to groups of between 6 and 10 pupils. Sheffield Sharks will provide transport to and from the sessions in our minibus.
